Renewing Our Open Source Pledge
We're renewing our Open Source Pledge because our business is built on and with open-source software. Join us in the pledge!

Alex Bouma
Founder Chief Tools
Last year, we proudly joined the Open Source Pledge, committing to contribute at least $2,000 per full-time developer to the open source ecosystem that powers our business. Today, we're excited to announce that we're renewing our pledge.
Why We're Renewing
Chief Tools is built on open source software. From the frameworks that power our application to the tools that help us deploy and monitor it, open source is the foundation of everything we build. The Open Source Pledge, initiated by Sentry, gave us a framework to formalize what we already believed, that companies benefiting from open source should give back to ensure its sustainability.
After a full year of participation, we can confidently say this: supporting open source isn't just the right thing to do, it's good business. The projects we support directly improve the tools and frameworks we use every day. The maintainers we sponsor continue to innovate and solve problems that benefit our entire industry.
Our 2025 Contributions
With an average of 1 full-time developer, we're contributing $2,400 this year with the maintainers of our dependencies, The PHP Foundation and the Filament project. This is a slight increase from our $2,072 last year.
Project | Amount |
---|---|
Various maintainers via thanks.dev | $1200 |
The PHP Foundation | $600 |
Filament (@zepfietje) | $600 |

The Open Source Pledge isn't just for large enterprises—it's for any company that depends on open source software (which, let's be honest, is virtually every company today). The $2,000 per developer guideline scales with your team size, making it accessible whether you're a startup or an established business.
If you're building on open source, we encourage you to join the pledge. Start where you can—even small contributions make a difference. Consider using tools like thanks.dev to automatically support your dependency tree, or directly sponsor the maintainers and projects you rely on most.
For PHP shops like us, supporting The PHP Foundation is a no-brainer. For those using other stacks, look at the foundations and core maintainers in your ecosystem as well as core tools in your stack that are being built by open source maintainers.
